Commercial Underwriter

Reporting to: Head of Renewals – South
Location: Home-based, covering a portfolio across South West England and Wales, with regular travel to client meetings across the region and twice-monthly team meetings at the Rearsby, Leicestershire office
Position Type: Permanent, 35 hours per week

Job Purpose:
As a Commercial Underwriter, you will be responsible for managing and underwriting a portfolio of trade credit insurance policies across a range of industry sectors, including construction. You will assess, price and structure new and renewal business, working closely with brokers, clients and internal teams to deliver commercially sound underwriting decisions and support the continued growth of the Credit portfolio.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced underwriter to take ownership of a varied regional portfolio, develop strong broker and client relationships, and contribute to the continued growth of our Credit business.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of trade credit insurance policies across agreed sectors and territories

  • Assess, price and structure new business opportunities using appropriate underwriting tools, including claims ratio analysis, excess calculations and pricing models

  • Prepare renewal terms, present recommendations for approval where required, and negotiate terms with brokers and clients to support retention and premium targets

  • Build and maintain strong broker and client relationships through regular meetings, including inception, renewal and mid-term reviews

  • Proactively work with brokers to identify and develop new business opportunities, including existing insured and uninsured prospects

  • Resolve day-to-day policy and credit limit queries, ensuring policy operations run smoothly for clients and brokers

  • Work within allocated authority levels, referring matters for approval where required in line with company authorisations

  • Liaise with Risk Underwriting, Sales, Customer Relations, Claims, and technical and administrative support teams to ensure effective policy servicing

  • Maintain accurate records of meetings, correspondence, decisions and action points, ensuring agreed actions are followed up promptly

  • Support senior underwriters and managers with portfolio activity, departmental projects, IT developments, testing, training and occasional marketing activity
     

Skills and Experience Specification:
Essential:

  • Level 3 qualifications (A Levels, CII Certificate etc) or equivalent professional experience.

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in commercial underwriting, trade credit insurance or broking, including managing a portfolio and working with brokers or clients

  • Strong understanding of trade credit insurance, including pricing, policy structures, risk assessment and portfolio management.

  • Commercially aware, with the ability to balance client needs, broker relationships, risk appetite and profitability

  • Confident using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, with the ability to accurately maintain data and records.

  • Strong communication and relationship-management skills, with the ability to engage confidently with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders

  • Highly organised, self-motivated and able to manage competing priorities while working independently

  • Strong written communication skills and a good level of numeracy, with the ability to interpret data and make sound underwriting decisions

  • A full UK driving licence with maximum 3 points, and ability to travel regularly across the region as required
     

Desirable:

  • Level 6 qualification (CII Advanced Diploma, Degree etc)

  • Knowledge of the construction sector

  • Knowledge of other specialist sectors relevant to trade credit insurance

  • Export knowledge or experience supporting clients with international trade exposures

Senior Trade Credit Underwriter

Location: Houston, Texas

​About the role
The Senior Underwriter manages key relationships and reviews complex transactions for key targeted Trade Credit brokers/markets/industries. This is an integral position that provides front facing external/internal marketing responsibilities as well as management of office underwriting duties and initiatives within their portfolio.

What you need to know:

  • Developing strong relationships with brokers and clients to grow the Underwriter’s portfolio of trade credit business

  • Underwriting large/complex, new and renewal insurance submissions and negotiating policy terms and conditions

  • Analyzing domestic and international corporate credits, evaluating financial information, and recommending or approving appropriate credit limits and terms

  • Professionally maintaining and properly servicing an existing portfolio of trade credit insurance business

  • Marketing, selling and presenting to brokers and insureds to increase submission flow

  • Engaging in various underwriting and marketing projects to improve overall company results

  • Training, mentoring, providing technical direction to fellow Underwriters to contribute to group revenue targets and meeting internal operations/audit directives for the division

  • Meeting operating and audit guidelines and goals of senior management

  • Participating in and completing special projects as required by the profit center

  • Regular collaboration with AIG distribution colleagues in identifying and closing trade credit opportunities

  • Some travel required
     

What we’re looking for:

  • Qualified candidates should have a background in credit or financial analysis and strong commercial development skills.

  • 5-7 years of experience in an underwriting capacity is preferred.

  • Experience in trade credit, finance, or banking preferred

  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Cap IQ, Salesforce, Factiva

  • Strong commercial development skills

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Bachelor's degree in business or finance required.  MBA preferable

  • Second language proficiency valued
