Credit Insurance News

ICISA reports steadier trade credit insurance conditions in Q3 2026. ICISA's Business Sentiment Survey Q3 2026 Report presents a steady picture for trade credit insurers. Demand was stable for 64% of respondents over the past six months and higher for 36%, with none reporting a decline. The medium-term outlook strengthened, with 64% expecting demand to increase beyond the next 12 months, compared with around 20% in Q1. Claims expectations eased slightly, although 67% still expect insolvencies to rise over the coming year. Pricing remains soft, according to 80% of respondents. Geopolitical conflict is now the leading concern, cited by 87%, followed by inflation and interest-rate volatility and by credit deterioration, each at 53%. Trade disruption and tariffs fell sharply in prominence. ABI highlights trade credit insurance's role in supporting business growth. Insurance Business reports that a new Association of British Insurers (ABI) report has highlighted trade credit insurance as one of the mechanisms supporting the growth of DCS Group, the UK's leading distributor of household, health and beauty products. DCS reached annual sales of £350 million in 2024, after exceeding £300 million the previous year, and has had a trade credit insurance policy for more than a decade. BPL director Jonny Carruthers noted that trade receivables can be among a company's largest uninsured assets, but may be overlooked when credit management and insurance purchasing sit with different teams. He added that trade credit insurance works best alongside strong credit management and can be a genuine growth tool. Poundland moves to reassure suppliers after trade credit insurers pull cover. Retail Gazette, citing The Telegraph, reports that Poundland has moved to reassure suppliers after trade credit insurers stopped providing new cover to some companies trading with the retailer. Senior management has reportedly held talks with suppliers in the UK and China as owner, Gordon Brothers, pursues a sale of the business. The talks follow moves by trade credit insurers to stop offering new policies to some Poundland suppliers amid uncertainty over its ownership. Gordon Brothers has appointed Alvarez & Marsal to oversee the sale process and is understood to be seeking around £30 million. Coface sees growth potential for trade credit insurance in North America. In Global Trade Review (GTR), Coface North America president and CEO Christina Montes de Oca stresses how rapidly changing tariffs, trade relationships and geopolitical risks are making the warning signs of corporate failure harder to spot. She argues that businesses should combine trade credit insurance with business information and stronger internal credit controls. Coface sees particular growth potential among US middle-market companies, where awareness of credit insurance remains limited, but, as Christina notes, products need to be simpler and easier to use. She also sees opportunities in complex AI and data-centre projects, where trade credit insurance could form part of broader risk and financing solutions, even where no single insurer can provide all the capacity required. What the FCA's SME finance review means for trade credit insurers. Insurance Business reports that the Financial Conduct Authority's (FCA) recent SME finance review confirms a pattern already reflected in trade credit underwriting. The FCA found that regulation is not a major barrier to SME finance. The barriers it identified lie in how the finance market functions, in smaller businesses' access to information about their options, and in their internal capability to act on it. The sharpest problems cluster among micro-businesses and start-ups, which lack the trading histories and asset bases of larger SMEs. The article says trade credit insurers have responded to this vulnerability with underwriting discipline rather than retreat, noting that Allianz Trade, Atradius and Coface did not pull back from the UK market, holding rates roughly steady while focusing on portfolio quality. Atradius says larger company failures are driving UK trade credit insurance claims. Speaking to The Insurer, Owen Bassett, Risk Underwriting Manager at Atradius, said recent claims activity reflects failures among larger businesses rather than a broad rise in smaller-company defaults. He highlighted liquidity as a key factor, with companies particularly vulnerable when funding is withdrawn or becomes more expensive. Owen said underwriters are focusing closely on liquidity and cash generation. Higher interest rates and refinancing pressures remain risks for leveraged businesses, with Atradius is closely monitoring retail, automotive and construction. Dutch Credit Brokers warns of tougher credit insurance conditions. FloralDaily reports that Dutch Credit Brokers co-owner Jeroen Wesseling believes the economy is heading toward a crisis. He expects this to lead to an economic downturn in the first quarter of 2027, although he concedes the bubble has seemed close to bursting before. Jeroen said insurers are already tightening credit limits and, in some places, raising premiums, which he called "unusual", noting it last happened during the 2008/09 financial crisis. Dutch Credit Brokers says fresh produce is its most important market. Greensill settlement leaves key trade credit insurance question unanswered. Insurance Business reports that Insurance Australia Limited (IAL) has settled the claims brought against it by Credit Suisse entities in connection with the collapse of Greensill, and that Marsh is understood to be covered by the settlement. Marsh had arranged Greensill's trade credit insurance and acted as its broker from 2014. Credit Suisse later added Marsh to the Australian proceedings, alleging that it had failed to ensure the insurance representations given to the funds were accurate. A central issue in the case was whether IAL was bound by policies allegedly issued on its behalf by underwriting agency BCC without sufficient authority. Because the claims have been settled on confidential terms, no court judgment on that question is available for coverholders, MGAs and brokers to learn from. To read Insurance Business' article, go to https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/uk/news/breaking-news/marsh-swept-into-iags-credit-suisse-peace-deal-as-greensills-biggest-insurance-fight-ends-591206.aspx.

Australian trade credit insurers tighten cover after retail collapses. ChannelNews reports that trade credit insurers are reducing limits and repricing risk across the electronics and appliance supply chain following the collapses of Mwave and Leading Edge. Mwave's administrators reported approximately AU$18 million owed to creditors, including AU$3.7 million to Leader Computers and AU$3.4 million to Dicker Data. An Allianz source told ChannelNews that insurers were reassessing fees because of market conditions and recent retailer collapses. Insurers are also concerned about how rapidly a retailer's financial position can deteriorate, meaning previously agreed credit limits may no longer reflect the level of risk by the time payment problems emerge. ICISA warns trade credit insurers over complex fraud structures. ICISA's new working paper, Understanding Fraud Patterns in Trade Finance, Credit Insurance and Surety, examines fraud patterns affecting trade finance, credit insurance and surety, drawing on five recent losses. It finds that trade credit insurers and surety providers were often not the fraudster's intended targets, but insurers still ended up paying claims. Common features included fabricated documentation, non-existent receivables, off-balance-sheet financing and trades that existed only on paper. ICISA says financial statements and ratings alone would not have identified these risks. It recommends that credit insurers build fraud risk explicitly into underwriting, particularly where insurance supports financing. To read ICISA's news release, with a link to the paper, go to https://icisa.org/news/when-fraud-isnt-what-it-seems/.

Atradius reports 64% rise in food industry credit insurance claims. Atradius says the number of food industry trade credit insurance claims it has received has risen by 64% in the UK over the past 12 months, which it describes as a clear indicator of the financial pressures affecting the sector. The insurer says the rise in credit default claims has coincided with a wave of acquisitions and business failures across UK food and drink manufacturing, amid high costs, labour and skills shortages, regulation and difficult export conditions. Atradius is watching bakeries and food service into hospitality particularly closely and warns that more firms could fail or be acquired by larger competitors. To read Atradius' blog post, go to https://atradius.co.uk/knowledge-and-research/blog/consolidate-or-collapse-the-pressures-reshaping-uk-food-and-drink/.

Demand grows for trade credit insurance linked to banks and technology. ICISA's Business Sentiment Survey Q3 2026 Report notes increased demand for bank-driven trade credit insurance alongside growing demand linked to emerging technologies. Among trade credit insurer respondents, 46% saw an increase over the past six months in whole-turnover business towards banks, while 46% reported no change; 54% expect increases ahead. Non-cancellable limits are the most in-demand structure, cited by 73%, followed by top-up cover at 55%. On technology, 78% reported increased demand for cover related to data centres and AI infrastructure, while the same share cited batteries, grid infrastructure and large-scale energy storage. The report also shows widespread AI adoption within the segment: 86% currently use AI and 93% expect to increase usage, with workflow management the leading application. To read ICISA's news release, with a link to the full report, go to https://icisa.org/news/icisa-publishes-q3-2026-business-sentiment-report/.

Nexus Trade Credit asks whether the market may be entering the early stages of a broader claims cycle. In a feature for Credit Insurance News, Ian Selby, Head of UK at Nexus Trade Credit, examines several traditional warning signs against a backdrop of subdued growth, weak business confidence and continuing geopolitical disruption, including the housing market, debt and refinancing risk, and strong demand for liquidity. He notes that UK insolvencies and insurer loss ratios have so far proved more resilient than expected, but says Nexus has seen claims frequency rise across successive quarters in 2026. Recent market losses, including Headlam Group and Exertis, suggest 2026 claims are likely to finish ahead of 2025. Ian concludes that predicting exactly when the cycle will turn is less important than remaining disciplined, informed and prepared, with timely information, strong market intelligence and robust risk protection. New opportunities and underwriting challenges for trade credit insurers. Global Trade Review (GTR) reports that trade credit insurers are being asked to support new and changing risks, from data centre developments to energy companies trading with unfamiliar buyers. Data centres present challenges because of the scale and concentration of exposures, while many projects are not yet generating revenue, leaving limited financial information for underwriting. In energy markets, disruption in the Middle East is pushing businesses towards new customers, while higher commodity prices are increasing the value of cargoes, with both trends driving demand for cover. This is taking place in a highly competitive market, with pricing remaining soft. GTR notes that the feared spike in trade credit insurance claims has not materialised so far, although Marsh warns that some claims linked to the Middle East disruption may only emerge over time. To read GTR's article, go to https://www.gtreview.com/magazine/gtr-issue-3-2026/risk-reframed/.

Zurich and Allianz Trade linked to Radiant World cover. Insurance Business reports that Zurich and Allianz Trade wrote trade credit insurance for Singapore-based iron ore trader, Radiant World, which is facing allegations over documents used to secure trade finance. Zurich reportedly wrote cover running into tens of millions of dollars against the risk of non-payment by several of Radiant's counterparties, including Glencore, but says it has no material exposure to Radiant World. Allianz Trade also provided cover, although its reported exposure was smaller than Zurich's. The allegations have not been tested in court, and Radiant denies wrongdoing. The dispute has also raised questions about how trade credit insurance policies respond when fraud is alleged. To read Insurance Business' article, go to https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/uk/news/breaking-news/zurich-and-allianz-trade-named-as-insurers-get-dragged-into-radiant-world-fraud-row-589460.aspx.

Court rejects request for extra security in €17.9 million trade credit insurance dispute. Insurance Business reports that Australia's Federal Court has rejected a request by BCC Trade Credit and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance for the claimants to provide an additional A$660,000 as security against possible legal costs in a €17.9 million trade credit insurance dispute. Triumph Metals & Minerals Australia and a Hong Kong affiliate say buyers failed to pay for coal and copper anodes and that €17.9 million is due under the policy. The insurers say some of the trade documents raise concerns about when they were created, whether the same goods may have been sold more than once, and possible fraud. The underlying €17.9 million insurance claim has not yet been tried, and the dispute remains ongoing. Late payments worsen as UK businesses struggle with cash flow. Coface's second survey of UK companies’ payment behaviour finds that 89% experienced payment delays during the past year. Payments were an average of 34 days overdue, two days longer than last year, with customers’ own financial difficulties the most commonly reported cause. Average agreed payment terms rose by 6 days to 57, placing them among Europe’s longest. Looking ahead, 57% of respondents expect late payments to increase over the next 12 months, up from 37% last year. Some 45% expect the UK economy to deteriorate, yet 51% believe their own profits will increase. Higher interest rates remain the biggest concern for businesses. Late payments affect seven in ten North American businesses. Atradius’ 2026 Payment Practices Barometer finds that businesses in North America conduct 43% of B2B sales on credit, and that late payments affect seven in ten firms and account for 23% of B2B receivables. Customer liquidity constraints are the main cause of delays, although most overdue receivables are settled within one month of the due date. Around one-third of suppliers report reduced cash availability, which affects investment decisions and liquidity planning. To manage payment risk, many favour advance payments, cash sales or early-payment incentives, while around one-fifth use tools such as credit insurance and bad debt reserves alongside internal credit management. Looking ahead, most businesses expect payment behaviour to stay unchanged, but more than one in four expect insolvencies to rise. Global GDP growth slows from +3.0% in 2025 to +2.6% in 2026. Allianz Research forecasts global GDP growth will slow from 3.0% in 2025 to 2.6% in 2026, then recover to 2.8% in 2027 before easing back to 2.6% in 2028. The US is expected to grow by 2.1% in 2026, 2.0% in 2027 and 1.8% in 2028, while Eurozone growth is forecast at 1.0%, 1.3% and 1.3%, respectively. Asia-Pacific remains the main growth engine, with growth of 4.4% in 2026. The UK is forecast to expand by 1.3% in 2026 and 1.2% in both 2027 and 2028. Allianz says its baseline depends on energy, bond-market and AI-related tensions easing rather than escalating, with downside scenarios ranging from stagflation to demand-side deflationary recessions. Coface reports record-high late payments among French businesses. Coface's France 2026 Payment Survey found that 89% of French businesses experienced late payments over the previous 12 months, up from 86% in 2025, while the average delay increased to 41.2 days. Micro-enterprises were particularly exposed, with delays averaging 46 days and 58% describing the impact on cash flow as "very significant" or "critical". Customer financial difficulties were the main cause cited. The deterioration comes alongside rising insolvencies, with 43,282 recorded in the first seven months of 2026, up 6% year-on-year and 46% compared with 2019. Coface expects insolvencies to rise 7% in 2026 and 9% in 2027 as payment pressures continue to mount.

Late payments affect 82% of German companies. Coface's latest German Corporate Payment Survey finds that 82% of German companies experienced payment delays during the past twelve months, the highest proportion since 2019. However, the average delay shortened to 30.2 days, from 31.8 days in 2025. Average agreed payment terms also fell, from 32.5 to 30.6 days, their lowest level since 2017. Automotive businesses recorded an average delay of 45 days, compared with 19.5 days for paper and packaging. The survey of 503 companies found growing optimism about 2027, but this has yet to translate into better payment behaviour. Coface expects German corporate insolvencies to rise by a further 5% in 2026, with credit risk remaining elevated into next year. Allianz Trade forecasts US growth to more than double the Eurozone rate in 2026. In its Sector Atlas 2026, Allianz Trade says the economic outlook varies considerably between major economies, forecasting 2.1% growth for the US, 0.9% for the Eurozone (upgraded to 1.0% in Allianz Research's 28 September outlook) and 4.7% for China in 2026. AI investment is helping sustain the US economy, contributing roughly a third of its growth, while the Eurozone is seeing almost no comparable benefit. Exports and high-tech manufacturing are supporting China’s growth despite weak domestic demand. Allianz Trade says a renewed US trade war is adding to the uneven outlook, while Middle East de-escalation has removed one acute risk but left the potential for flare-ups. Growth is increasingly concentrated in AI, defence and energy. To read Allianz Trade's insight, go to https://www.allianz-trade.com/en_global/news-insights/economic-insights/Sector-atlas-2026.html.

Automotive suppliers, construction and paper face the highest UK sector risks. Allianz Trade's September UK Sector Snippets identifies automotive suppliers, construction and paper as the highest-risk sectors covered by its assessment, while pharmaceuticals has the strongest rating. Across UK sectors, rising costs, weak demand, geopolitical disruption and pressure on cash flow continue to affect trading conditions. In construction, financial difficulties are spreading beyond smaller businesses to mid-sized and established firms, while insolvencies remain elevated. Paper and print businesses face falling print revenues, excess capacity, and margin pressure, although packaging businesses are proving more resilient. UKEF announces up to £5 billion Flexible Finance pilot. The UK Chancellor has announced Flexible Finance, a UK Export Finance (UKEF) pilot offering up to £5 billion in loan guarantees to encourage overseas buyers to purchase British goods and services. Announced on 28 September, the product will target selected buyers in fast-growing economies such as Brazil, Morocco and Mexico, where the government sees scope to increase UK exports. Guarantees will cover up to 80% of a commercial loan, giving borrowers greater flexibility over how they use the funding than under UKEF's existing guarantees. UKEF will work with participating borrowers to increase their imports from British companies, supported by matchmaking with UK suppliers and procurement assistance. The initiative aims to widen access to finance while helping British businesses secure opportunities in overseas markets. Atradius highlights contrasting risks across nine UK sectors. Atradius' Q3 2026 Industry Highlights report says businesses face higher costs, margin pressure, subdued consumer confidence and geopolitical uncertainty, although opportunities remain in technology, sustainability and operational efficiency. Among the sectors, construction remains challenging, with weak demand and a thin pipeline, and underwriting stays cautious. ICT benefits from strong demand for AI, cloud, cybersecurity and digital transformation. Atradius remains positive but more cautious on food and agriculture, while metals underwriting focuses on margins and working capital. In transport, risk appetite remains strong, although limits apply to highly leveraged hauliers, intensive fuel users without effective hedging and single-franchise auto dealers exposed to manufacturer agency-model shifts. Trade credit insurers reassess cover for commodity trades. Global Trade Review (GTR) reports that disputes following trader insolvencies in 2020 and 2021 have led trade credit insurers to reconsider cover for “string trades”. In these transactions, intermediary traders buy and resell goods several times in transit, often without intending to take delivery, to generate short-term funding. ICISA’s Richard Wulff says he hears that some smaller insurers no longer want to cover commodity trading, while larger insurers tend to focus on large commodity traders. Other insurers remain willing to provide cover but have changed policy wording. Wulff suggests insurers who want to exclude financing-driven string trades could require traders to show they intended to take possession of the goods. Lawyers say traders should disclose their arrangements to underwriters from the outset to avoid allegations of misrepresentation. Rezolva develops Credit Control Health Check for trade credit insurance brokers. Rezolva has developed a new Credit Control Health Check designed to help trade credit insurance brokers engage with prospective and existing clients about their wider credit management strategy. The tool reviews areas including credit checks, credit limits, payment terms, overdue debt and bad debt exposure, helping identify potential weaknesses in a business's current approach. Rezolva says the Health Check gives brokers a more natural way to open conversations about underlying credit risk and show where trade credit insurance may complement a client's broader credit management strategy. The company is currently working with a number of broker partners on co-branded versions for use in their own business development activity. Atradius forecasts uneven GDP growth across Latin America and the Caribbean. Atradius' LAC Economic Outlook – October 2026 says growth will remain subdued and vary sharply across the region. South America is expected to be the weakest-performing subregion, with GDP growth slowing from 2.9% in 2025 to 2.0% in 2026 before edging up to 2.2% in 2027. Mexico is forecast to grow by 1.2% in 2026 and 1.5% in 2027, while Central American growth is expected to ease from 4.3% to 3.3% before recovering to 3.7%. The Caribbean is expected to be the strongest-performing subregion, with growth forecast to rise from 3.7% in 2025 to 4.4% in 2026 and 5.2% in 2027, supported by tourism, investment, reconstruction and higher oil output from Guyana. Tokio Marine HCC highlights rising credit risk despite falling UK retail insolvencies. Its September 2026 UK Retail Sector Report says retail sales volumes have returned to February 2020 levels, but this recovery has been achieved while non-food prices remained flat despite rising costs. Retail insolvencies totalled 1,763 in the 12 months to July, down 7.3% year-on-year but still around 35% above 2019 levels. Across England and Wales, administrations rose 19.3% to 1,810, returning to their immediate pre-pandemic peak. The report says distress is shifting towards larger companies and bigger trade creditor balances, while pre-pack sales can leave unsecured creditors with poor recoveries, as illustrated by the Harvey Nichols case in August. IAG settles Credit Suisse Greensill claims. Reinsurance News has reported that IAG's subsidiary, Insurance Australia Limited (IAL), has agreed to settle Credit Suisse proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia. The litigation concerns policies purportedly issued by BCC Trade Credit on IAL's behalf to Greensill entities. Claims had an aggregate face value of approximately A$2.8 billion plus interest. Terms are confidential, but IAG says the settlement will not materially affect its financial position or FY27 results, reflecting anticipated insurance and reinsurance recoveries and other indemnities. The agreement follows May's settlement of proceedings brought by Greensill Bank. White Oak's remaining claims, worth approximately A$170 million plus interest, continue to be defended.
